Gnìomh: Business Awards for Gaelic

Information Pack and Entry Form

The Gnìomh Business Award for Gaelic recognises the increased use of Gaelic amongst businesses and social enterprises in the Highlands and Islands, as a language customers are able to see, hear and use.

There are three prizes: 1st: £3,000, 2nd: £1,500, 3rd £500

Information about the 2010 winners is available here

Entries for Gnìomh – Gaelic Business of the Year – should be submitted by June 30th 2011, with judging taking place in July. The awards will be presented over the summer months, 2011.

Just as our Gaelic identity helps define the Scottish Gàidhealtachd, so making Scottish Gaelic visible on signs, on branding or on marketing materials can help promote and define the identity of companies operating in the Highlands and Islands. Likewise, bringing spoken Gaelic into a company’s operations, services and communications can help strengthen this link with Gaels and with Gaelic Scotland.

The use of Gaelic in companies can help:

  • extend customer choice
  • enhance a company’s image and harness goodwill
  • emphasise a distinct Scottish or Gaelic nature of an organisation or its products
  • satisfy customer and client demand
  • enhance customer service and care

The Gnìomh award recognises good practice in the use of Gaelic in the business sector. Business and the commercial sector represent an environment in which those in work spend a significant period of their time, and for many it is an important place of community life. It is therefore an important arena in which they should have the opportunity, where appropriate, to express them in a language with which they are comfortable and/or develop their own language skills.

Gnìomh will recognise and acknowledge the best use of Scottish Gaelic and each application will be assessed on the merits of the business organisation’s efforts to identify, encourage and further develop the use of Gaelic in its own area of operation or business sector.

Gnìomh award criteria

The criteria and definition of a business to enable entries is “a recognised commercial enterprise operating as a business”. It should be operating on a stand-alone basis rather than as part of a wider Group and should not be part of the operation of local authorities, enterprise companies or organisations funded by public agencies. The entries will be judged against the following criteria:

  1. use of Gaelic in dealing with customers 40%
  2. Gaelic as an audible language amongst staff 20%
  3. Gaelic as a visible language within the company 20%
  4. use of Gaelic in image/marketing of the company or its products 20%
