Gleus: Community Awards for Gaelic

The Gleus Community Award aims to reward the use, celebration and promotion of Gaelic as feature of community life in the Highlands and Islands, recognise the important role Gaelic and Gàidhealach culture can play.

1st Prize £3,000; 2nd Prize £1,500; 3rd £500

Information about the successful 2010 entrants is available here

Entries for Gleus – Gaelic Community of the Year – should be submitted by June 30th 2011, with judging taking place in July. The awards will be presented over the summer months, 2011.

The Gleus award is aimed at identifying the Gaelic communities of the year, recognising the contribution of a community towards the growth and revitalisation of Gaelic usage at community level.

Just as community-land or community-energy projects can help revitalise and reinvigorate communities, so too the Gaelic language and Gàidhealach heritage of the Highlands and Islands might be seen as community and cultural assets which can strengthen and sustain communities, promoting a communal sense of identity, of common cultural heritage and of cultural vitality.

The use of Gaelic through simple tools such as signs, or Gaelic greetings in a community’s shops, cafes or other meeting places, can help promote an appealing sense of a community proud to celebrate its Gaelic heritage on a day to day basis. Likewise, it is important to promote the availability of spoken Gaelic for Gaels, informally and/or formally, while accessing services and interacting in the community. Social events based on and/or celebrating communities’ Gàidhealach heritage can help promote a sense of cultural and community vitality and wellbeing as well as passing on traditions to new generations.

Gleus award criteria

Entries for Gleus may be made by any recognised and clearly defined community throughout the HIE area. There are no strict limits to the size of the community, be it a township, village, town or a collection of townships and villages, as long as the area can be defined as having sense of belonging to a common community. It is important to note that the Gleus award is for a “community” and not for a “community event” although a community event may very well be part of the submission on behalf of a community. The judges’ decision on eligibility will be final.

The entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

  1. use of Gaelic as a spoken language 20%
  2. the visible use of Gaelic in the community 15%
  3. frequency of Gàidhealach social events 15%
  4. the use of Gaelic amongst young people 30%
  5. availability of Gaelic education or childcare 20%
