About Gaelic
- According to the 2001 census there were 58,652 Gaelic speakers in Scotland
and additionally there were approximately 34,000 people able to read, write or
understand the language
- There were 2316 children in Gaelic medium education at primary level in
2010/11 and there were 60 Gaelic medium units
- There were 802 children in Gaelic nurseries in 2010/11 and there were 58
Gaelic nurseries in Scotland
- There were 410 pupils doing Gaelic medium education at secondary level in
2010/11 with provision now expanding
